DC (Comics) In Crisis

So in case you haven't already heard, DC Comics just released the first issue of their newest mini-series "event" Heroes In Crisis. This is supposed to be a story that is heavily inspired by real-life tragedies we deal more often than it should, and places that same horror squarely in the DCU.

What I'm talking about is an instance of a mass-shooting/killing where superheroes and not ordinary civilians, occurs at a place that's supposed to be a safe haven for said superheroes. Again this is taken literally from recent headlines themselves where a huge number of kids are are being shoot and killed by fellow/former classmates in a place, an institution that's usually regarded as a safe place of learning. Instead of a school, this takes place at all call center/support center for Superheroes called Sanctuary (you know, just to further twist the knife for the reader) where superheroes can go to help deal with the typical issues and problems associated with the life a superhero has to deal with on a regular basis.

Now I'll be brutally honest; I don't like this mini-series, or the concept.

To me, as topical as this may all be, I don't feel it has a place in a fantasy world like comics.
And no, I'm not saying comics can't be more mature and adult-like, I just don't feel a topic like mass-shootings is something I want to read about in my comics when it already takes over what I watch and read in the news. I think we all usually want a safe haven of our own from the tragedies of the real world, why force this shit on comic readers?

I wrote about this issue in detail on another blog I follow, Dork Forty! by Mark Brett, and here's what I had to say in the comments' section:

"Now see I have a different opinion on Heroes In Crisis. Personally, maybe this story wouldn’t feel as cheap and sensationalistic as it does if something like this had happened to establish the concept of Sanctuary rather than to what, prove why it’s not a good idea? Seriously, other than trying to be topical, this seems like just another excuse for Didioit and Friends to satiate their blood-lust, distorting what was supposed to be a new era of hope and rebirth into just more of the same dark, pessimistic bs from before the whole Rebirth project.

I have no doubts that the deaths were handed down by editorial, so I won’t shoot the messenger, but I damn will will shoot the message.
This is where I argue that due to the subject matter, and how often it occurs in real life, we don’t need the same situation to invade a source of escapism from these types of things.

And really, other than solving a mystery as to who or whom did the killings, what’s the endgame here? This reeks of Identity Crisis, in that the identity of the culprit took a backseat to the story being told. It really didn’t matter who the killer wind up being, and I have a feeling the same thing will apply here.

It’s not like anyone will be able to stop this sort of thing from happening again, so why show it at all?"

Again, not to say that comics shouldn't ever reflect how or current society is and its troubles, but honestly, what do all these deaths really mean anyways? To what ends are they committed? It's not like there's going to be a nice little solution that neatly fixes and solves this, is there?


That and they killed of Wally West.....again......for no reason other than DC's weird obsession with killing off Flashes every time there's an event with the word "Crisis" in it.

So much for this new, so-called era of hope and positivity that Rebirth was supposed to stand for right?

I mean no sooner that Geoff Johns steps down as chief overseer-er of the comics side of DC, that Dan Didioit and Friends swoop right in and start killing off people left and right, just like they did last time. Has anyone at DC not learned their lessons with Dildo yet?



Oh well, what the hell I say. It's not like I buy or read comics anymore anyways.....


On to more positive stuff though, I just bought the newest Marvel Legends Avengers Obsidian Black BAF Wave Taskmaster figure to go with the updated one that came out a couple years back, as well as the new X-Men Apocalypse BAF Wave Gladiator figure.

And I just ordered the punk Storm figure from that same wave as well as the recent Spider-Man Series Doctor Octopus figure.

 I swear to God he looks more like Elton John than his previous figure, and I didn't even think that was possible.

In case I'm spoiling Batman#50 for you (which I couldn't have because DC let the New York Times do that already) Batman and and long-time cock tease/fuck buddy/frenemy Catwoman did NOT get married after all the specials and stories leading one to presume DC was finally going to pull the trigger and marry off one of it's longtime confirmed bachelors in one Bruce Wayne.

But alas, it wasn't meant to be.

The official reason given by the runaway bride, is that Batman needs to be miserable in order to be Batman effectively, and a happy Batman would be a bad Batman, as in a Batman bad at his job because that's what happens when you get married.....I guess.

So she (the writer Tom King and editorial) decided to sacrifice her/their happiness so that he could be Batman he could be....single and unattached. You know, happy for a change.

Yeah, dumb AF I know. 

It's pretty much a bullshit reason, since we all know the Earth-2 versions of Batman and Catwoman sure as hell didn't have any problems getting hitched, with Batman continuing to be Batman well after they got married until he the day he decided to retire and become commissioner of Gotham. 



Plus we got The Huntress from the holy union.


    Personally I was 50/50 on the whole deal myself.



One one hand it would've been interesting to see it happen, not to mention finally making new stories even more interesting now that this new dynamic would be in place with a new addition to the Bat-Family.

I had a strip in mind to discuss all this, but passed because it'd be too long, and probably not funny enough.

Basically Damien would wonder, if Batman and Catwoman weren't getting married, if that meant she wouldn't be his new mommy anymore.

Yeah, probably. Plus pointing out that your real mom, Talia, would have a HUGE bitch-fit over that is a massive understatement.

Anyhoo, yeah Batman and Catwoman could've been happy....even the though on the other hand it would've eventually gotten dissolved/undone via some sort of CRISIS event DC's so fond of rolling out every so often.

Personally I think Selina's being dumb as hell. If she had decided to go through with it and marry Bruce, all she'd have to due is consummate the marriage, what how ever long it takes before she could qualify for alimony, and divorce his ass and being sitting pretty financially for a good long while.

Of course, that's provided Mr. Thinks of every contingency wouldn't have had her sign a prenup just in case.

Some thoughts about Hydra Cap and DC Rebirth....

TGIF!!!!!


So....

I've had lots of time to cool down after initially hearing about Marvel turning Captain America into a secret undercover Hydra agent. I still think it's a dumb idea, or at least one better served as a What If? story.

But.....

After reading a reviewer's review and assessment on the situation, it got me thinking.
Basically the guy says all those of us who are pissed and lashing out on the internet, need to calm down because we're acting like marks. without waiting to see how the story ends.

Ok, that's fair. But still. Me no likie.
But after he explained three very likely scenarios that could be the reason why Cap's suddenly Hailing Hydra, I had to think about it.

His three scenarios/reasons are as follows:

1). The Red Skull(who's still alive and in full use of his mental powers he stole from Prof. X's brain as has been shown in Uncanny Avengers) could've possible mentally brainwashed Steve into thinking he's always been a Hydra agent.

2). Baron Zemo's posing as Cap.

3). The cosmic cube, which not only restored Steve's youth and super soldier abilities, is responsible.

Now, considering all three, I personally believe it's either the Red Skull, or Zemo, who's responsible.
Here's why;

-If it's the Red Skull, then this makes a lot of sense, and seems like the sort of sick and insidious type of think he'd do to this arch-enemy. It just does. Whether or not he's using his stolen mental powers to do this or using a cosmic cube to do it, much like how he altered the Falcon's back history, then, yeah, I can see the Skull's fingerprints all over this.

                                                              But.....

-It could also be Zemo's doing. Why? Because of acting SHIELD director Maria Hill. In the Avengers: Standoff event, Maria Hill attempted to answer the question we've all asked about why superheroes just don't kill the bad guys since they're always coming back no matter how many times you lock them up, or at the very least, the ones that are hardcore evil and unrehabilitative.  Hill, instead of killing them, decided to use SHIELD-grown cosmic cubes to place the criminals she had in custody in a Matrix-like environment, where they were not themselves, but instead living on as different people who were made to forgot their true selves. As is usually the case, the whole backfired, and the bad guys escaped. But they remembered what happened what was done to them and decided to get revenge on all parties responsible.

Well, Baron Zemo was one of those villains locked up, and he swore revenge.
Maybe he's in possession of a cosmic cube and decided to strike at his old enemy, Captain America first, in one of a series of planned attacks. How else to really to fuck with Cap, but to make him belief he's always been a Hydra agent right? Makes sense the more you really think about it.

So that's where I am at on that whole thing.
I mean yes, it'll eventually be overturned, as these things always are, but for me, it's just a silly idea in the first place. But what do I know, I'm just a mark....

Now onto DC Rebirth and how Geoff Johns is blaming (in-story) the whole NU52 reboot fiasco on Dr. Manhattan.

Yes, that's right, Dr. Manhattan.

Apparently, Dr, Manhattan stole ten years away from the DCU and its heroes during/after Flashpoint, and because of this, he either outright created the NU52verse and put them in it or altered their reality enough to fuck everything up.

So yeah, now we're all supposed to blame the last 5 or so years on Dr. Manhattan.
Oh and Wally West is back, which is good, since he's the mystery narrator in the DC: Rebirth story. Apparently Dr. Manhattan locked him out of the main reality, keeping him from warning the others, but he's back now, as is Ted Kord and a few others.

And there's three Jokers.
That's right 3 Jokers....and one of them might've been The Comedian.

 That's what Batman learned from his time sitting on Metron's Mobius chair, when he was attempting to learn the Joker's real name. That there's been 3 Jokers running around in the DCU. Now whether or not Johns is counting different Earths or not, I don't know, but that's what's been presented to us.
How did Harley not know this? Or Batman, the DCU's greatest living detective? I bet he feels like such a horse's ass right now.....

And this is just the beginning of a very long endgame planned to span over the next couple years. So that means limited follow ups with slow reveals over time as to the motivations of why Dr. Manhattan did this. I know it's been suggested that at the end of the original Watchmen series, Manhattan was talking about going off to create live somewhere. Guess that's exactly what he did, or so we're lead to believe.

So yeah, everything's pretty much back to normal, but it's all the Watchman's fault for the NU52 reboot.




Man if Alan Moore wasn't already pissed at DC and the comics industry as a whole, I'm sure he is now.....

"Give Me Silver, Blue And Gold..."

I don't know if you guys have already heard this or not, but Warner Bros. announced recently that they're going ahead and planning on making a buddy movie about Booster Gold and the Blue Beetle.
Which is great right? About time. Problem being, they're not using the beloved Blue Beetle we all know and love, Ted Kord. Nope, they're using the Jamie Reyes version. *Sigh* Lame.

Well our boys just found out about it, well Ted hasn't. Yet....

Well, it kinda is. After all a lot of bad decisions in comics are being done under the banner/excuse of trying to show more diversity, be it gender or race.

Just horrible.....
