Back-Issue Spotlight: Bratpack TPB

Happy Hump Day...

....And welcome to the first 2015 edition of  Back-Issue Spotlight.e Spotlight.
Today I'm covering the collected trade version of the highly controversial and influential work by writer/artist Rick Veitch.

Two weeks ago I happened by a store called 2nd and Charlie's that buys and sells new/used items like comics, books, trades, games, etc.
Amongst a bunch of really good and cheap finds, was this trade collecting all the issues of Bratpack, a very famous and influential piece of work I've heard about for awhile, but never saw in print.
I bought it for only 6 bucks, and now I get to review it.

Now to get some quick historical context of Bratpack, I'll briefly explain where the idea of Bratpack came from and what was going on at the time.

Bratpack came about because of two major occurances in the professional life of Rick Veitch;

1). In the process of writing Bratpack, but before any major work was actually done, he was currently writing DC's Swamp Thing. He  had recently taken over the writing reins from Alan Moore, and was well into his run, when he hit a snag. Swamp Thing #88 to be exact.

Apparently Veitch had Swampy going backwards in time, where he visted famous historical characters, both DC and real historical figures.
Well for issue 88, SW was supposed to meet Jesus(but going by the name Nazarene instead).
Nothing too conroversial there.....untill then DC president Janette Kahn and some of the other higher-ups @ DC read the part at the end of the script where Nazarene would be crucified with Swampy standing in as the cross he gets crucified too.

Despite numeous prior viewings by his editor and others, he was green-lit to run with it.
But then Kahn saw that one little part, and all of a sudden Veitc and that entire issues was labled blasphamous and DC refused to publish it. Even with some minor changes.
So, Veitch quit right there and then, and hasn't worked for DC ever since.

2). The second event that directly led to the creation of the Bratpack, was the infamous 1988 "Death In The Family" Batman storyline where readers voted to kill off the Jason Todd incarnation of Robin.

Simultaneously surprised and shocked that comic readers would actually vote to kill of such a character like Robin(even if it wasn't the original) was enough to get Vetich thinking about the actual absurdity of sidekicks in comics.

So with that in mind.....here's my quick review of Rick Veitch's Bratpack.

The story starts off in the ficitional city(well aren't they all?) of Slumsberg.

Right off the bat, Veitch lets the reader know what they're in for.

The whole story starts off with the lead "villain" of the story, Dr. Blassphemy, calling into a local radio station and innocently asking "What about the children?", in reference to the group of super-hero sidekicks in the town, the Bratpack.

This surprisingly brings a lot of hate and negative reactions in regards to sidekicks in general and why they even exist.

Oh yeah, Veitch is defintiely bringing the meta-commentary here, and he' laying that shit on extra, extra thick.

From there, we're introduced to Cody Batson, who just happens to look like every dark-haired kid sidekick out there, and it's very much intentional.

Seems Cody's a big fan of the Bratpack and their mentors, who are every bit as perverted and whacked out as you get from a comic that satarizes the whole kid sidekick thing.

How perverted?
Basically Veitch takes and channels all of Dr. Fredric Wertham's bizare and fucked up criticisms and insinuations, like Batman and Robin being gay and shit, and turns it all into a reality here.

-The Midnight Minx is a Batman analogue who's openly gay and is portrayed as a perverted and leacherous rich guy, who enjoys molesting his sidekicks.

-King Rad is an analogue for the Green Arrow(with a good bit of a very cynical Tony Stark thrown in there). He's a rich drunk, with plenty of toys like planes, cars, and all sorts of shit to ride around in.
He also has no qualms whatsoever about killing people, and is about as far from being a bleeding heart liberal as one can be.

-The Moon Maiden is the Wonder Woman analalogue, and is shown here as a man-hating harpy warrior who loves to fuck/fight/castrate men.

Lastly, there's Judge Jury. He's the Captain America analogue who's a sadistic and overt racist and major steriod junkie/enthusiast.

They're basically the mentors from hell, who enjoy treating their sidekicks as nothing but cheap disposable entertainment.

That's right. The Bratpack are truly Disposable Teens.
*Cue Marilyn Manson
So yeah, that.

In fact Veitch further illustrates this by showing them pissed off when their sidekicks from earlier in the series are blown up and killed by their arch-nemsis Dr. Blasphemy.
It's not they're pissed because their sidekicks are dead; no they're a dime a dozen, very easily replaceable.
No they're pissed because Dr. Blasphemy made them look bad....and the fact that have to keep recruiting new sidekicks to keep recieving those nice royalty checks.

It's Sad, and very unexpected that the Superman analogue here, Maximortal, is the only decent one out of the whole group......and he's dead.

Yep. These superheroes sold out and bought in. Perfect metaphors for large comic publishers/corporations that own our childhood heroes.

It occured to me, that these twisted evil fucks, are what the Earth-3/CSA versions of the JL should really be and act like.
Sure they may not seem as powerful, but they're far, far more corrupt and perverted than the CSA could ever hope to be.

And trust me, if you think the main "good guys" are fucked up, wait to see the Bratpack themselves.

-Wild Boy is Kid Rad's sidekick, so he's Speedy....

....if Speedy had long hair, had a serious drug and alcohol problem and rode around on a flying surfboard like those cool future kids from Back To The Future 2.

-Luna is Moon Maiden's sidekick.

She's become indoctrinated to also hate men, yet simultaneouly looking like the very epitome of their sexual desires.

-Kid Vicious is the steriod-fueled, raging sidekick of Judge Jury.

Poor bastard is so doped up on steriods, he has to gobble down pain pills like tic-tacs, while pissing blood.
He's also the epitome of every jock you ever met.

Finally, there's Chippy.

He's the Robin to the Mink's Batman.
And yes, he's as fucked up mentally and emotionally as Wertham believed.

Veitch really does his best here in this series to pervert and twist the wish-fullfillment and innocence aspect of of wanting to be a sidekick.
And nowhere is that more apparent than the way he takes the replacement sidekicks recruits and twists them and their dreams of being superheroes.
Trust me, once you read just how far they all spiral down the rabbit whole in order to be superheroes, you'd wish they never had. Just like they eventually do.

You really should give this a series a read if you can find it.
It's has all those nasty sterotypes and criticisms that have pervaded comic book heroes for years made manifest.

It's distrubing, true, but so dead on about the attitudes, commericalism, and all the bad connotations that exist underneath the surface of our childhood memories.

In fact, despite being published back in 1990, it's still very much relevant to today's society.
Very much the perfect companion to The Watchmen and the Dark Knight Returns.

"...And nothing else matters."

"There's a sucker born every minute"
-P.T. Barnum (1810–1891)

Happy Hump Day folks! That's right, this is the middle of the work-week, so press on, because Friday is a mere 2 days away!

I wanted to briefly discuss Dan Didio's controversial statements that all Crisis events are no longer in continuity in the rebooted DCU.

I first saw this made mention @Bleedingcool.com, and if you follow this link, you'll see what I'm talking about:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/10/01/all-crisis-events-removed-from-dc-continuity/.

So, Didio basically states on facebook this:
I'll "bracce myself indeed. Learn to spell idiot!

How nice of Didio and Co. to declare this(note the sarcasm)
So what does this mean exactly?
You know all those trade paperbacks of those famous DC events from the last few years that you "just had to buy"? They don't mean anything anymore. So basically they're worthless(continuity-wise that is) and you wasted your hard-earned money on something that won't likely be ever referenced to again.....except maybe 5-10 years down the line, or whenever Didio and Co. feel like declaring those events to have happened again.

How nice for all those loyal DC readers)and me) who bought those expensive TPBs.

So basically, Final Crisis, Infinite Crisis(which actually does deserve to be forgotten) maybe the 1st Crisis, 52, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, and Countdown no longer matter. Wow. And DC just suckered fans to "have to" buy BL and BD last year and the year before that respectively. For those poor people, I feel bad for you.

Not to mention Morrison's Batman epic storyline R.I.P. is also majorly affected, thus possibly making even that one moot as well. I wonder how Morrison personally feels about that? I'm sure the barrels full of money he's made helps, but it still has sting on a professional level.

Maybe he reads this quote by Elizabeth Bowen:
"Art is the only thing that can go on mattering once it has stopped hurting."
I will admit though, to possibly seeing Didio's view on this;(oh no Hell's frozen over!)
Like he said, this reboot is pretty much like the very 1st one back in 1985/6 w/ the 1st CRISIS.
The writers, artists, and editors all had to start continuity from scratch basically, and while that led to whole bunch of problems due to not everyone being on the same page, it also paved the way for Vertigo and other forms of progressive story-telling. So with really good books out there like Synder's Swamp Thing and Batman, and  Lemire's Animal Man, perhaps there's still hope for DC yet.
Still, it can't possibly feel good to those creators who worked on those events to see it "doesn't matter" anymore. Yes, the physical works are still out there to be enjoyed by all who own them, but that still doesn't soften the blow any less.

And now for your Zen moment of the day:
Some people just have it all don't they?

"Video killed the radio star"

Happy Hump Day people,

today's post is titled "Video killed the radio star, or in today's modern terms, Reality TV killed the Music channel.

Ah, MTV. What a difference 30 years makes huh?
You wouldn't know it by looking at us, but MTV and I were born 3 days apart, which makes us brothers/siblings from another mother....I think.

  • Yessir, MTV was born Aug 1, 1981, and while I was born Aug 4, 1981.
  • Like MTV, we both hooked up to machines by cables, cords, and plugs.
  • Like MTV, we were both deemed "failures", and not given much hope to survive through the year.
  • MTV's first weeks' progress were made public(but only if you could find it on your TV) featuring a non-stop,  24-hr marathon of Rod Stewart videos because they had nothing else to fill the time. My 1st few weeks weren't as newsworthy, but were eventful enough. Sadly MTV beats me though since they at least had Rod Stewart videos to look at. Hey stop laughing, Rod was the still the man back in '81.
  • We both changed radically the day we turned 15. MTV fully embraced the Reality era before it even knew it existed, continuing to produce hit reality shows like "Real World" and "Road Rules". I discovered porn....lots of it. Thanks HBO!
  • When MTV turned 19, Boy bands were all the rage, while all the Jonas Brothers and Justin Biebers of the world were still enjoying their nap times and juice boxes. When I turned 19, I graduated from High School and met the love of my life.....while occasionally missing those same nap times and juice boxes oddly enough.
  • We were both officially legal when we turned 21, even though I know MTV probably got to drink alcohol before I did. Bitch. Not to mention I turned 21 on a Sunday, in a town that's a dry county on Sunday. MTV turned 21 on a Thrusday, thus got to drink before I did....yet again.
  • MTV and I both turned the big 3-0 this year. We've both changed physically over the years; I've lost a little of the top and gained some in the middle, while MTV just looks younger and younger every year, but also loses something as valuable as my hair is to me:  actual music videos.

What happened MTV? You went from VJ's, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Madonna and make-shift game shows in the 80's to Extreme sports, Rap, the Real World, Beavis and Butt-head, Kurt Loader, Jesse and Matt Pinfield in the 90's, to uber craptastic boy bands, Brittany Spears, and Carson Daily in the 00's, to the present with hardly any music/music videos that are decent and and a shit-load of Reality TV that features pregnant teens, rich, young snobs that have chosen the Paris Hilton way of life, and New Jersey caricatures of Italians. WTH!? When did MTV become all about that, and less about the music?

Remember when MTV 2 was brand new? How that channel was supposed to be what MTV even back then, used to be? If you watch MTV 2 now, it's like MTV cloned itself, and now you have 2 channels that hardly show music anymore, just talking, if you can call it that.

Sad really. Oh MTV, how you've let yourself go.....
I'll check back with you when we both hit the big 4-0.

So there, that's the tale of two (almost, kinda')siblings that were born 3 days apart....

On a more serious note, please send your thoughts and prayers to those that were killed and/or wounded by a crazed gunman named  Eduardo Sencion at a Carson City, Nevada IHOP.  Included in the senseless killings were 3 National Guardsmen.

Humping around on Hump Day!

Hey bitches, it's Hump Day!!!!
I don't know how the hell the term ever came about....wait yes I do....I just looked it up on Wikipedia.org.

Here's the definition according to them:

The term alludes to the fact that Wednesday is the middle of the work week, meaning that one has made it "over the hump" towards the weekend.
 Or this from www.urbandictionary.com

Wednesday, or the hump of the week
The absolute BEST day of the week, the day of maximum hope that maybe, you might make it out of this week alive. A particularly good hump day can last you the rest of the week, and by Doomday morning (Monday) you survive by anticipating hump day. Nothing goes wrong on hump day

Most other days can be defined by hump day. Tuesday is the day before hump day. Thursday is one day after hump day. Except Friday is WOOOH!!! FREEDOM!!! Day, Saturday is Mostly Hungover day, and Sunday is PreDoom day.

Hump day has nothing to do with sex. Unless one wants it to. I like to declare the existence of hump day just to see people's faces. Usually being conservative and all
"Do you know what the best thing about Tuesdays are? Its the day before Hump Day!"
"What's hump day?"
"It's the hump of the week!!"
(they all shake their heads in pity)
Exactly. So when did it become perverted and twisted around?  Anways, here's some Hump Day pics to amuse you all with. Feel free to steal 'em, 'cause you know I did.

There, did you get it all out of your system by now? Good.

By the way, with my 30th birthday less than a month away, I recently found this cool little 'site. Thanks to http://siskoid.blogspot.com/ you can go to here: http://www.dcindexes.com/, and find what comic(s) came out on the day of your birthday. Just plug in the month and year you were born, and voila! Cool huh?
I chose Amazing Spider-Man#222, because I collected Spider-Man titles when I was starting out in comics, and because visually, one of my favorite villains Speed Demon re-debuted here.

Enjoy the middle/hump of the week.....until next time bitches.......

"Closing time. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

Well..... I kinda always knew this day would come, and it sure has. It's been a hell of a ride, but it's time to for it end. Ti...
